Papers II, 1700-1784.

Papers of Nicholas Gilman include an essay by Benjamin Colman and others in response to Increase Mather's "Gospel Order"; notes on some Nathaniel Gookin sermons (1725-36); a 1741 list of books lent; and assorted letters. Among the correspondence is a letter from John Seccombe, a letter to Colonel Robert Hale reporting on troops during King George's War, and a letter from his son Tristram Gilman to his wife Mary Gilman.

Nicholas Gilman was born in Exeter, New Hampshire on January 18, 1707/8. He graduated from Harvard in the Class of 1724, and went on to receive an AM in 1727. After graduation, Gilman taught school and acted as a substitute for area ministers in New Hampshire. On March 3, 1741/2, he was ordained in Durham, New Hampshire, where he gained notoriety as a New-Lights revivalist. Poor health plagued Gilman throughout his life, and he died on April 12, 1748. Tristram Gilman (1735-1809) was the pastor of the First Congregational Church of North Yarmouth, Maine, from 1769-1807.
